The anesthesia team is authorized to start all surgical operations. Its aim is to ensure that patients do not feel pain during the operation and to reduce their reflexes. In addition, the patient’s general health flow and life safety are the responsibility of this unit.

Reanimation is the resuscitation of the respiratory or circulatory system. In addition to post-operative awakening, reanimation is also called the process of returning the values in case of stopping or decreasing vital values as a result of an unusual situation (heart attack, poisoning, trauma, etc.).

The above-mentioned procedures are only performed by specialists trained in anesthesiology and reanimation.

The drugs to be used in the Anesthesia and Reanimation department vary depending on some conditions;

  • General health status of the patient
  • Whether there is a chronic disease condition
  • Presence of allergies
  • The area or organ to be operated on
  • The method to be used during the operation
  • Anesthesia examination and appropriateness of test results
Which Diseases Does Anesthesia and Reanimation Unit Treat?

Different anesthesia methods may be required according to the characteristics of patients and surgeries. For this reason, each patient is evaluated by an anesthesiologist in the ward before surgery. In the department of anesthesia and reanimation, which deals with surgical operations of all diseases, 4 different anesthesias are applied according to the diseases: general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, local anesthesia and sedation.

  • General anesthesia
  • Regional anesthesia
  • Local anesthesia
  • Sedation
General Anesthesia

It is a method used to anesthetize the patient’s whole body and to make him/her unconscious. In this way, the patient sleeps during the operation. He/she is immobile, does not feel pain and does not remember the operation process. General anesthesia can be performed by administering medication intravenously. It can also be administered by inhaling anesthetic gases through breathing.

Regional Anesthesia

It is the process of numbing a certain part of the body. For example, below the waist, arm or leg… In this application, the patient is conscious. There are different types of regional anesthesia such as spinal, epidural and nerve block. Spinal anesthesia is used for operations in and around the waist. It is especially preferred for cesarean sections and normal deliveries. The patient is anesthetized from the waist down so that he/she does not feel pain and ache. Epidural anesthesia is also used in many surgeries, especially in childbirth. The patient’s legs are not numbed.

Differences Between Spinal Anesthesia and Epidural Anesthesia:
  • Spinal anesthesia is the process of numbing the lower back. In epidural anesthesia, the lumbar region is numbed and the feet can be moved.
Both are administered through the spinal cord area, but in epidural anesthesia the needle is injected outside the membrane called ‘dura’ in the spinal cord. In spinal anesthesia, it is applied to the fluid inside the membrane.
  • With epidural anesthesia, numbness occurs within 10-15 minutes, while with spinal anesthesia, numbness occurs within 1-2 minutes.
  • Both types of anesthesia can be preferred during the birth process, but those who give birth normally with epidural anesthesia can be taken to cesarean section at any stage of the birth. Expectant mothers who prefer spinal anesthesia, on the other hand, cannot give birth normally, but can only give birth by caesarean section in a conscious and painless way.
Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is mostly used in minor surgical or medical procedures. For example, mole removal, facial injections, dental procedures… Anesthetics are injected under the skin and only the nerve sensations in that area are neutralized. The patient is still conscious with this method of anesthesia. Local anesthesia is generally safe, and the chance of serious problems is very low.

Sedation

In sedation, the person is asleep. However, this sleep is not deep and the eyes are not always closed. They can watch what is going on around them, but after the procedure is over, they do not remember anything. Sedation is used to relieve the patient’s anxiety and excitement and is administered intravenously. This method of anesthesia is often preferred for colonoscopy, endoscopy and dental operations.
