The cardiology unit examines problems related to the circulatory system and heart. Specialists in this unit receive the title of cardiologist after 6 years of medical education and 5 years of specialization in cardiology. Cardiologists deal with heart attacks, heart rhythm disorders, heart failure, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, vascular occlusion, congenital heart diseases, valvular heart diseases. They use diagnostic methods such as ECG, ECHO, Doppler, rhythm holter, blood pressure holter, angiography. Perform invasive interventions such as stents and pacemakers.

People with symptoms such as rapid fatigue, bruising, palpitations, fainting, shortness of breath and chest pain should be seen by a cardiologist. As with many diseases, early diagnosis is very important in cardiologic diseases. Therefore, regular cardiologic examinations are necessary.

Which Diseases Does Cardiology Unit Treat?

Blocked arteries and heart attack: If there is stenosis or blockage in the blood vessels leading to the heart, the heart does not receive enough blood and is deprived of oxygen. The most important causes of blocked arteries are high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Smoking, a diet rich in unsaturated fats and being overweight lead to plaque blockage of the arteries. Lack of nutrition in the heart can lead to a heart attack. Symptoms of a heart attack include sudden and severe pain radiating from the chest to the left arm, back and jaw, shortness of breath, sweating and nausea.

Hypertension: High blood pressure, which means blood pressure, is called hypertension or high blood pressure. Hypertension is considered to exist if the systolic blood pressure is above 120 mmHG and the distolic blood pressure is above 80 mmHG. Patients with hypertension are usually asked to make changes in their lifestyle. Salt consumption is controlled and ideal weight is tried to be achieved. Medication is also an important part of treatment.

Valve diseases: Valvular heart diseases occur when the valves in the right and left chambers of the heart are insufficiently functioning or narrow. In such a case, early intervention is very important. Valvular heart disease can be congenital. Congenital valve insufficiency is called “congenital valvular heart disease”. However, most valve diseases occur after birth and are called “acquired valvular heart disease”.

Rhythm disturbances: The heart rate of an adult should be between 60 and 100 beats per minute at rest. Arrhythmia refers to an irregular heartbeat. When the heart beats slower than normal, faster than normal or beats at irregular intervals, it is considered an arrhythmia. A slow heartbeat is called bradycardia (beats below 60 beats per minute) and a fast heartbeat is called tachycardia (beats above 100 beats per minute).

Heart failure: Heart failure is the inability of the heart to send the blood the body needs. The most common cause of heart failure is the inability of the heart muscle to contract due to damage caused by a heart attack. Treatment is done according to the cause. For example, if it is caused by a heart valve, it is necessary to replace the valve, and if it is caused by high blood pressure, it is necessary to start medication to control blood pressure.

Congenital heart diseases: Babies with developmental disorders in the vessels, walls or valves of the heart may experience breathing difficulties, excessive sweating, bruising of the lips, fingers and toes, and developmental delay. Most congenital heart diseases can be diagnosed in the womb with fetal echocardiography performed at the 18th week of pregnancy. If an anomaly is seen, planning is made accordingly. Some diseases resolve spontaneously as the baby grows; some require medication and some require surgical treatment.

Fainting: Fainting, also called syncope, is a temporary loss of consciousness. The cause is a temporary decrease in blood flow to the brain. Fainting can be a sign of other underlying diseases and the source should be identified.
